VICTORIAN AGE

First of all, I want to share an interesting information.  Queen Victoria married a German prince in 1840 and she wore a White wedding dress first time in history. Also she provided a model of respectability both her family life and personal life.  Surely, literature affected this good fact.

British empire was expanded and had a strong role in the all world in this Victorian Period. England became the most powerful country in the world even lots of people said that “ the sun never sets on England” because England spread out all over the world.  A lot of revolution was seen in this period.  Both cultural and political space was made an important changes. With an  industrial revolution was build a lot of powerful factories and  also steam hammers and locomotives were made. A lot of railways were built. In fact, everything is for rich people because for poor people wasn’t change anything. And with industrial development was seen more problem in this period because pollution and child labour was seen. And many diseases and health problems were seen like colera and thyphoid. So lot of people killed due to this health problems. We can also see some thinkers in this period like Karl Marx and Charles Darwin. 

Finally, everything wasn’t good for everybody. Although England was a strong and important country for everybody some people who lived in England was not happy for this because some fact couldn’t change.

ROMANTIC PERIOD

In eighteen century, thinkers could solve all problem using their reason properly. They valued order, reason and balance in rationalism. Also, they thought that society should also be orderly. They believed that reason was important rather than emotions. But, In the middle of century, romantics were appeared. They believed that emotion, prose, feeling, supernatural element on the contrary, reason, scientific works, balance and order.

Romantics generally believed imagination, intuition, idealism, inspiration and individuality. Imagination was a reaction against the rationalism and according to romantics, imagination was considered necessary for everything. Also, intuition was so important for romantics because they believed emotion was more important than everything. Idealism was also important thing in this period. Inspiration was precious for romantics like some musician, artist or writer. Also individuality had an important role in this period.

We can see a lot of work and precious poets and writers. William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats are important poets in this period. They produced unique examples in this period.

Finally, I could say that emotion and feeling are so important in literature. We can see the most beautiful examples of feeling an emotion in this period.

THE RIME OF ANCIENT MARINER

                                      THE RIME OF ANCIENT MARINER

We learnt ‘The Rime of Ancient Mariner’ in this week. This work was written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Romanticism Period.  Also, this story had a lot of supernatural facts but I really liked it and found amazing.

         The story started with wedding ceremony and continued other thing. I didn’t understand this and I found interesting. A Mariner travelled with ship in a sunny day. But suddenly, ship turned to southward due to strong stream and they came in South Pole. Ship couldn’t move anywhere because everywhere was frozen. Then sailors saw an Albatross bird and everybody believed that this bird bring good luck so mariner killed Albatross. After this, fog lifted and ice melted suddenly. Sun appeared but it was so hot like a desert. They thought that this bird brought a bad luck and they blamed each other.  Sailors killed and mariner lived alone for a long time but he didn’t kill. He saw a ship but he couldn’t shout because he was so thirsty. Finally one day, he saw the fish and see animals and he thanked to the God for this beauty after that he was forgiven and sailors arose from dead. Wind helped to him for travelling.

         This story is a good example for supernatural facts in a literal work in Romantic period. Also when we think that period, “The Rime of Ancient Mariner” is a unique work for not only English literature but also work literature.

Quotation

“O drug!” said I aloud, “what art thou good for? Thou art not worth to me, no, not the taking off of the ground; one of those knives is worth all this heap; I have no manner of use for thee; e’en remain where thou art and go to the bottom as a creature whose life is not worth saving.” However, upon second thoughts, I took it away. . . .

In this quotation, Robinson describes the money as a “drug”. Robinson finds the money and starts to think. And then he understands that it is worthless. Because he lives alone in this island and he don’t need to money. But he takes the money interestingly because he thinks that if someone comes to island, he gives the money for returning his country. I understood that he loves to money in every case and he still believes that money can solve everything.

ROBINSON CRUSOE

This week, we talked about Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe also we watched a film. I knew something about this novel but I didn’t wonder to watch a film. But this time, I wanted to film because we learned about this novel in a literary sense. We read a novel in the book and also watched a film. So, we could see differences between film and book easily. I want to base on film because I understood the novel by watching the film more effectively.

Robinson Crusoe had to run away from the city because he killed a man so, he sailed. While he travelled in the ship, they were caught in a storm. Everybody died in ship but luckily Robinson rescued. He had to live alone an island. He brought the food from the ship and he had to use little by little. Because he didn’t know when he rescued from this island. He accustomed to island life day by day and he announced a Gog of this island. One day, he heard  strange noises and when he went through these noises, he saw cannibals. He shocked firstly but then he rescued one person from cannibals. Then, he called a “Friday” and he introduced himself as a “master”. Robinson educated to Friday in every field not just language. And Robinson started to see Friday as a slave.

After twenty eight years, Robinson and Friday sailed together and they went to England. In fact, I learned a lot of thing from this novel. Being patient and hope is enough to be happy.
